Three quick fundamentals to write more and write better.

(1 min read) These are simple ideas but I love to repeat them. To myself. Because sometimes I forget. When my focus drifts, I bring it back here. These are a North Star that takes me back to my page.

1) Tell the truth. You can write lies if you want to (it’s your page!) but I think writing stuff you actually believe in is more fun, a more exciting challenge, and gives your best chance at making an honest connection with your audience.

2) Don’t give up. Writing is easier some days than others. Even if you give up on a project, please don’t give up on writing. If you’re ready to quit writing forever, then quit! Never look back! But if you still want to do this, you deserve the chance to try.

3) Have fun. Enjoy yourself on the page whenever you can. It’s not always a picnic, but welcome as much fun and pleasure as you can get. You’ll write more stuff (and write more often) if you like doing it.

Writing coach Megan Cohen is a white cis woman with soft femme hair. She wears a black tee shirt and stands against a white wall. She smiles gently with warm eyes. Her skin is amazing even though she's middle-aged.

These (hopefully) really quite helpful creative writing tips offer what I’ve learned as an award-winning author who writes a million words a year, and what I’ve learned about supporting others as a private writing coach.

There’s no one way to write. There’s only your way. I hope some of my tactics and ideas can help you find it.

Yup, I’m a writing coach.

I work with folks at all levels of experience and all levels of income. My writers range from unhoused teens living on the streets to C-suite executives who want to up-level their communication. If you want a private coaching session but can’t afford it, email megan@howtowritesomething.com and ask for scholarship info.
